Watch a video about the module 1 test.

Off road element Module One

This generally takes around 20 minutes to complete and incudes the following manouvres:

  • Wheeling the moped or motorcycle and using the stand
  • Doing a slalom and figure of eight
  • A slow ride
  • U-turn
  • Cornering and controlled stop

There is no minimum speed requirement for the first cornering and controlled stop excercise, but there is a minimum speed requirement of around 32 miles per hour (50 kilometres per hour) for the emergency stop and hazard avoidance excercise.

Motorcycle Manoeuvring Area

Module one takes place in a safe off-road area called a motorcycle manoeuvring area. You can download diagrams that show the two different layouts from the link below.

Module Two: on-road test

Module 2 is the on-road element and normally takes about 40 minutes. You must bring your module 1 pass certificate to module 2, plus all the documents you had to bring to the module 1 test.

Module 2 includes the follwing:

  • An eyesight test
  • Road Riding element
  • Vehicle safety and balance questions
  • Independent riding element

Eyesight Test

Before you are able to start the test, you must prove to the examiner that your eyesight is adequate. You do this by reading a clean number plate of the old style from the minimum distance of 20.5 metres (approximately 67 feet or 5 car lengths). If reading the new style number plate then you must be able to read it from a distance of 20 meters (approximately 66 feet).

Road riding

You will be asked to ride in a variety of road and traffic conditions, and carry out the following manouvres:

  • Normal stops
  • Angle start (pulling out from behind a parked vehicle)
  • Hill start
  • Dual Carriageways
  • Junctions
  • Roundabouts

The examiner will give you directions using a radio. They will normally follow you on a motorcycle.

Vehicle safety and balance questions.

You can download a list of all the safety and balance questions you could be asked by the examiner.

Independent Riding

Here you will have approximately 10 minutes of Independent riding. This is designed to assess your ability to ride safely whilst making your own decisions by following both road direction signs and markings. At the end of module 2, the examiner will give you your result and feedback. If you are successful the examiner will explain to you how to exchange your provisional licence for a full licence.
